My Annual Take the Leap Post. August 1st will alwa My Annual Take the Leap Post.
August 1st will always be an anniversary of sorts for me. On this day, now 4 years ago, I deliberately left my long-time staff job as a product designer to become a full-time freelancer. It wasn’t an easy decision, or easy to do. But...no regrets.
I love the indie studio life I have now: the flexibility to set my own hours, to work on my own things, to travel at will (when we can),to teach, and to be available to my family at large. It took a bit, but I now have an agent I love, and my very own books in the works...which is what I was aiming for. No one could have seen what was to come for me in May 2021, when sarcoma hit hard and relentlessly. But again, zero regrets. Consider where you are in your life, and if it’s where you’re meant to be, surrounded by who you want. Some things will prove out of your control, but a lot are.
Many thanks for your wonderful support out there. 💛

Some very recent scenes from this very summer! I a Some very recent scenes from this very summer! I am grateful to have been able to do these little excursions this year. 💖
I’ve lately spent just as much time in the hospital than out. A lingering cough turned into a fast-growing tumor in my bronchial tube that quite frankly, nearly killed me, but was saved at Mass General Brigham. A week later, I have fluid filling my lung and copious bleeding (I won’t get into details) sending me ultimately where I am: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute + Brigham and Women's Hospital, up here in Boston.
Here’s the deal: my cancer, PEComa, a very rare type of Sarcoma, has been metastatic and aggressive since it was found in May 2021. After multiple treatments and chemos to merely control it, I am back at a place where I am being aggressively treated with “AIM” chemo again to stop its rampage. Really, just to “plug the dam,” as it were. But being here inpatient in Boston is the best place for me to be now while we take our best aim (lol) at this beast. This is the initial heavy attack, and the treatment is almost as hard as the disease. We can only hope it works so we have some time to try other treatments after this. AIM chemo works on 20% of Sarcoma patients. The first time I did it, it worked for me, buying the time, just as we are hoping for now. But Sarcoma is a morphing beast, perpetually changing. AIM your good vibes at this monster.
Eric and I spent our 31st anniversary here in the hospital yesterday.
Sorry it’s hard to message everyone; but to those of you who want to know, this is what’s happening. Will I take your best vibes? You bet!
Love the vibe and book selections @savoybookshopca Love the vibe and book selections @savoybookshopcafe ! Especially the well- stocked and chosen kid’s section. Bought a big stack of books today!
