Check out the February 07 issue of Highlights High Five magazine!
I did the shoelace-tying art for this feature about the “Shoelace Chipmunk Trick.” This was a tough piece to work on- apparently there are a bunch of ways to successfully tie a shoe; and this was a new way to me (my husband knows yet another, euro-style way)! I had to tie my own shoe at least 50 times to draw it.
I bet it will take the average 5-year-old much less time to learn it (but then, they don’t have to draw it)!
Liz, that’s really cool! Nice job!
Thanks Liz!!! No more velcros for me!! Funny and curious that when I draw sneakers on kids, it’s always of that style. PF Flyers, wasn’t it? Now back in style, I suppose. I like that you bordered your art in tied laces too. Is that your daughter in the photo?
Hey that is wonderful! It looks great! Congrats!
Terri- yeah, I always draw this kind! BTW, the photo of the girl and the tied laces were all supplied: I only had to draw the technical lacing diagrams!
You’ve made a very difficult concept look so easy!! I’m sure lots of parents are going to be happy when they see this in “Highlights”!
…High Five to YOU!!
Liz, my som learned that method in preschool, and at 15 he STILL ties his shoes that way. i offered to show him the more grown up method and he refused. Sounds like it works!

Love the new site Liz! Oh I never saw the Jan issue that I think my art was in…I always feel so out of touch! Does you husband know how to knit the European way…I want to learn!
Congrats!! I flipped through that issue real quick last night on my way out of Barnes and Noble – wish I had know to look for this– darn!
